EMMA'S ESSAY
She By Emma Walthers
When I was younger anyone who was different was weird I knew no in between I did not understand that those people in the grocery store who would flail their arms and yell about absurd things, had no other choice Autism was not a term I was familiar with. As the mother takes her child to the movies and is booed out of the theater because her son is frightened of an ad. As the students laugh at the guy who truly does not understand the concept being taught and worse yet, the teacher does not make one effort the help him But simply treats him just like any other student with a normal processing time Disney this past year decided to make it more difficult for families with a special needs child to enjoy the amusement rides they have to offer . And on their very website people find the audacity to post that a child who does not understand the concept of time and why they have to wait in long line should not be coming at all Why is it that the X-Men are looked upon so favorably because of a genetic mutation while people with Autism and Asperger’s are |
cast aside like the underdog who plays such an important role but everyone chooses to overlook due to their differences. She will come in my room and look at the posters hugging the walls and name each and every person after only hearing them once She will show me a picture of our solar system and describe each planet as if it were the back of her hand She knows things I didn't until I was well in elementary school She will sort through my book case and find books I read this year and read me passages like reading was a natural skill. She is teaching herself Chinese and recently had a conversation with Chinese people who understood everything she said She has senses that are heightened to a degree an average person will never understand She can hear all the instruments in an orchestra and pin point each sound to its source She can hear a blender and be in pain She will be subjected to teasing and ridicule and she may not understand and laugh along with them She breaks my heart when she is sad She is my sister and she is autistic. |
